Demographics and Professional Education

Professional education includes law school, medical school, and business school, offering primarily J.D., M.D., and M.B.A. degrees, respectively. The legal and medical professions are licensed and self-regulated; attendance at their respective professional schools is a prerequisite to license qualification.  There are 205 accredited law schools, 149 accredited medical schools, and 492 accredited MBA program business schools in the U.S.

Life Gaps

Of the population in the United States aged 25 and older, only 11.2% hold graduate or professional degrees.  Given that only X% of college graduates finish in an income quintile higher than their family of origin, X% (X of whom are black) of all college graduates attend medical school, Y% (Y of whom are black) attend business school, and Z% (Z of whom are black) attend law school, how can the most prestigious and academically and training intensive professionals and educational institutions in this country increase access and success for low-income and minority students?

Research Gaps

Demographics data for applicants to professional schools are not easy to find.  Race and ethnicity disclosure are not required for standardized entrance exams or even applications.  Data at the professional level is even more difficult to gather.

Cost-Benefit Considerations

[CITE]  The same holds true for clients in legal practice.

Why are there certain ethnic or racial trends in medical professional categories, with more minorities going into fields that require less than an M.D. or even college degree.
